What is an Engine Emissions Light?

Posted: 25th October 2016

Engine Emissions Light – What does it mean & should you be concerned?

Engine Emissions Light

As most of us know all modern cars and vans have an engine emissions light/engine management light. Shown in the image its the orange irregular shaped symbol on the dash board that represents the engine.

The light comes on whenever the engine management system recognises a change. This could be in a component or sensor that is working outside its normal operating range. Sometimes this light comes on randomly and then goes off again when the engine is running.

When and if this happens to your vehicle – don’t panic it may be just a blip in the system. A temporary fault that has happened in the software, or a sensor that is coming to the end of its reliable life.

However if the light remains on for at least 2 or 3 journeys it would be a good idea to have it code read. This will then identify what system or sensor is causing the light to come on.

We must stress that at least 50% of the time the engine emission lights come on for what are nuisance reasons. For example slight wear and tear in the engine, that will not affect the reliability or performance of the car.

At 1st Stop we actively discourage repairs of this type. Where-by our customer is not going to get value for money.

However if the problem uncovered results in the reliability or safety of the vehicle being compromised, it could be necessary to carry out a repair.

If you are concerned about your car and would like further information please call Kevin or Steve at 1st Stop Cars.
